"Words are a lens to focus one's mind"

For the first time in my life, I was asked to put myself in the position of some of my favorite authors and write the beginning to my own original novel. After reading various books from the same genre, contemporary modern fiction, I began to take note of the similarities and reoccurring themes within these novels. After doing so, I began to write the first few chapters, along with a general synopsis and characters sketches, of my own novel titled "Delirium". This analysis of the genre and process of writing a novel had an extreme impact on my own personal growth as an English major, a writer, and a teacher. I had never before realized all the hard work and numerous decisions that went into writing a novel. I had so many great ideas in my head as to what I wanted to happen in the novel, what the characters were going to be like, and the major themes that would be present within the novel. The hard part was actually sitting down and deciding the style, organization, and word choices I was going to use to develop my story. I had never previously realized how much work and decision making goes into writing novels, but after sitting down to write my own, I have now gained a new appreciation for writing. Below I have added the first few chapters of my very first novel, as well as the character sketches and general synopsis of the story, and my analysis of the stories from the same genre. Enjoy!
